Streatham stretches along the A23 between Brixton and Norbury, with Streatham Common and its surrounding hills to the south and the residential grid of Streatham Vale to the west. The area has no Underground station, so a lot of residents rely on the car, and the roads range from a long, busy high street to steep residential climbs.
Streatham gives you sustained busy-road driving on the A23, real hills for hill starts, and quiet streets to begin on. Mitcham test centre is around four miles away, and the roads towards it through Streatham Vale and Greyhound Lane are part of normal lessons here.

Every area has its unique road conditions. Here is what you will learn to handle confidently:
Streatham High Road (A23) is long and busy, with bus lanes, crossings and traffic pulling in and out for most of its length
Leigham Court Road and the roads up to Streatham Hill are steep and narrowed by parked cars, so hill starts and judging gaps go together
Streatham Common North (A214) climbs with junctions partway up the hill where visibility is limited
Junctions off the High Road are close together, so mirror checks and signalling have to be timed carefully
Weekend traffic around the shops and leisure centre slows the High Road to a crawl
Our instructors share local knowledge from years of teaching in this area:
Streatham Vale is quiet and wide enough for first lessons and manoeuvre practice
Leave the High Road until you can move off and stop smoothly without thinking about it
The hills around the Common are the best place locally to practise hill starts in real traffic
Lessons towards Greyhound Lane and Streatham Vale head in the direction of Mitcham test centre
Not a generic syllabus. These are the Streatham roads lessons are built around, in the order most learners meet them, ending at the test centre most local learners use.

A steep, winding climb with parked cars narrowing the road. Hill starts and judging when to give way on a slope.
A climb with junctions partway up where you cannot see far ahead, so speed and observation have to be planned early.
Long, busy and full of bus lanes, crossings and cars pulling in and out. It builds the steady concentration a test needs.

Nervous about the first one? Here is how it goes, start to finish.
Your instructor meets you at a point in SW16 agreed when you book. Streatham station is a common one. The lesson starts when you get in the car.
You read a car number plate from 20 metres, the same check the examiner does on test day, and your instructor looks at your provisional licence. It takes two minutes, on your first lesson only.
You drive to Streatham Vale and go through the controls with the engine off: seat, mirrors, pedals, gears and steering. You do not move the car until you know what everything does.
Moving off, stopping and steering on a quiet road, with dual controls on the instructor’s side of the car. You will usually be driving within the first half hour, and nobody is taken into busy traffic on day one.
You go over what went well and what to work on, agree what the next lesson covers, and get a rough idea of how many hours you are likely to need before a test at Mitcham Test Centre.
