How to Start Driving Lessons in Wimbledon
Never had a lesson before? Here is exactly what happens, from the paperwork you need to the moment you first pull away. It is simpler than most people expect.
- 1
Get your provisional licence
You need a provisional driving licence before your first lesson — it is a legal requirement, not a formality. Apply on GOV.UK. You can apply from age 15 years and 9 months, and it costs £34 online.
- 2
Check you are old enough
You can start driving a car at 17. You can drive at 16 only if you receive the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP. There is no upper age limit on learning.
- 3
Book your first lesson
Message us on WhatsApp or fill in the enquiry form with your rough availability and whether you want manual or automatic. We will match you to an instructor and confirm a time. No deposit needed to get started.
- 4
We meet you
We agree a convenient meeting point in Wimbledon, Morden, Mitcham or the surrounding areas when you book. Your lesson time starts when you get in the car.
- 5
Your first lesson
Bring your provisional licence and glasses or lenses if you wear them for driving. That is it. We start somewhere quiet, cover the controls, and you will be driving within the first hour.
Ready for lesson one?
Tell us your availability and we will match you with an instructor covering your area.
How Many Driving Lessons Do I Need?
There is no fixed answer — it depends on where you are starting from and how often you practise. Tell us two things and we will give you a realistic range rather than a sales number. Nothing is paid upfront: you book lesson by lesson.
Pick your experience level above to see an estimate.
These are estimates, not a promise of test readiness. They are based on the DVSA's widely cited average of around 45 hours of professional tuition plus 22 hours of private practice for a complete beginner, adjusted for experience. Your instructor will give you a straight answer after an assessment drive.
Driving Lesson Services Across Wimbledon
We provide structured, DVSA-aligned driving lessons in Wimbledon and Southfields for all levels — from complete beginners to learners preparing for the practical test.
Manual Driving Lessons
Our manual lessons help you develop smooth clutch control, gear changes, hill starts, roundabout handling and lane discipline across real Wimbledon road conditions. This builds strong hazard perception and observation skills, preparing you to drive confidently in both city and rural areas.
A manual licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars once you pass.
Automatic Driving Lessons
If you prefer a simpler learning experience, our automatic driving lessons remove the stress of gears so you can focus on road awareness, junctions, manoeuvres and busy-town traffic. This is ideal for nervous learners or those driving mainly around Wimbledon, Southfields and other busier parts of South London.
Automatic lessons often lead to quicker confidence and a smoother route to test standard.
Intensive Driving Courses
Our intensive driving courses in Wimbledon are designed for learners who want to reach test-ready level in a shorter timeframe. These fast-pass programs follow the full DVSA syllabus, cover the local roads around your test centre and focus on the skills examiners look for in the practical driving test.
Perfect if your test is already booked or you want results quickly.
Beginner & Nervous Driver Training
For new or anxious learners, we start with the basics — vehicle controls, moving off, steering, simple junctions and early hazard perception — before progressing to real traffic. Lessons are paced around your comfort and confidence.
A clear path from beginner to safe, controlled driving.
Refresher Driving Lessons
If you haven't driven for a while or feel unsure on modern roads, our refresher lessons help you rebuild skill and confidence. We update your Highway Code knowledge and practise real-life scenarios like roundabouts, night driving and dual carriageways.
Drive independently again with renewed confidence.
Mock Test Preparation
For learners close to their test, we run realistic mock driving tests with independent driving, sat-nav practice and manoeuvres such as bay and parallel parking. Training on typical Morden and Wimbledon test routes helps reduce nerves.
Increase your first-time pass rate with realistic practice.
Female Driving Instructors
Prefer to learn with a woman? Ask when you enquire and we will tell you straight away whether a female instructor is available for your area and times, manual or automatic.
Same price as any other lesson.
Pass Plus Course
Pass Plus is the DVSA scheme for newly qualified drivers, covering the six areas a driving test never puts you in — motorways, dual carriageways, night driving, all-weather driving, rural roads and town driving. It is training, not an exam, so there is nothing to fail.
Build real-world confidence in the months after you pass.
Test Day Car Hire
A dual-control instructor car for your practical driving test, for learners who do not have a suitable vehicle available on the day. The car is fully insured, maintained and meets DVSA requirements.
Get in touch with your test date and centre to check availability.
Manual vs Automatic – Which Should You Choose?
Choosing between manual and automatic driving lessons in Wimbledon depends on the type of roads you drive on, the level of control you want, and how quickly you aim to reach DVSA test standard. Each transmission offers a different learning curve, so selecting the right one helps you progress faster and drive more confidently in real Wimbledon traffic.

Manual Driving – More Control, More Flexibility
Manual driving lessons are the best fit for learners who want full licence flexibility and stronger long-term driving confidence. Training focuses on clutch control, gear changes, engine braking and precise vehicle handling across both rural and town roads in Wimbledon. This approach strengthens hazard perception, lane discipline and overall road awareness. Once you pass, a manual licence allows you to drive both manual and automatic cars, giving you more freedom when choosing a vehicle later.
- Drive both manual and automatic cars
- Stronger hazard perception and road awareness
- Full licence flexibility for any vehicle
Automatic Driving – Easier, Smoother, Ideal for Busy Areas
Automatic driving lessons offer a simpler, less stressful route to becoming test-ready. With no clutch or gears to manage, you can concentrate on road position, junctions, roundabouts and manoeuvres, making it an excellent choice for nervous learners or those driving mainly around high-traffic areas like Wimbledon, Southfields or central London. The smoother controls allow you to build confidence faster and focus on the core skills examiners want to see in the practical driving test, often making automatic the quicker path to passing.
- Easier to learn - no clutch control needed
- Less stressful in high-traffic areas
- Faster progression to test standard

Intensive vs Weekly Lessons — Which Is Right for You?
Both routes cover the full DVSA learner driver syllabus and both are taught on the roads around your test centre. The real difference is pace, cost spread and how much time you can give it each week. Neither is a shortcut — the standard you are tested to is identical.
Intensive — test-ready in weeks
Concentrated lessons over days or weeks rather than months. Suits learners with a test already booked, a job or university place that needs a licence, or anyone who has driven before and wants to convert that into a pass quickly.
- Typically 1–3 weeks end to end
- Higher cost per week, lower total elapsed time
- Best if you can commit several hours a day
- Skills stay fresh between sessions
Weekly — steady and affordable
One or two lessons a week over several months. Suits complete beginners, nervous learners, and anyone spreading the cost. Most people who have never driven find this easier to absorb — there is time to reflect between lessons.
- Typically 4–6 months end to end
- Spreads the cost across months
- Fits around school, work or shifts
- Room to practise privately in between

Either way, you learn the local roads
Whichever route you pick, we train on the roads around the centres our learners actually test at — Morden and Mitcham. You build early familiarity with the junctions, roundabouts and road types you are likely to meet on the day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Got questions? We've got answers. Here are the most common questions we receive from our students in Wimbledon & Southfields.
The number of lessons varies for each learner, but on average, most students need between 40-50 hours of professional instruction to reach test standard. However, this depends on several factors including your previous driving experience, natural ability, frequency of lessons, and private practice. At Driving Lessons Wimbledon, we create personalized learning plans tailored to your pace, ensuring you're fully confident and test-ready. Some students may require fewer lessons, while nervous or anxious learners might benefit from additional support.
Lessons are £75 for 2 hours, and manual and automatic cost exactly the same. Block booking brings the rate down: 10 hours is £365 and 20 hours is £730, which works out at £36.50 an hour. An intensive course is £730 for 20 hours. A mock test is booked as a 2-hour lesson at £75, the test day package (warm-up lesson, the car for your test and your instructor on the day) is from £150, and Pass Plus is £250 for the 6-hour course. Full prices are on our pricing page. If you are not sure which package fits, use the lesson estimator on this page or message us on WhatsApp.
Morden and Mitcham. In April 2025 to March 2026, Morden passed 50.96% of candidates and Mitcham 47.03%, against a national average of 50.04% (DVSA figures). Lessons are planned around the roundabouts, dual carriageways and residential streets that come up on those routes, and our free guides to both centres explain what to expect on the day.
Yes, automatic cars are generally easier for new drivers to learn in. You don't need to worry about clutch control, gear changes, or stalling, which allows you to focus more on road awareness, positioning, and decision-making. Many students find they progress faster and feel less stressed in automatic lessons. However, keep in mind that an automatic license only permits you to drive automatic vehicles, while a manual license allows you to drive both. At Driving Lessons Wimbledon, we offer both manual and automatic lessons with modern, well-maintained vehicles, so you can choose the option that best suits your needs and lifestyle.
On average, it takes 4-6 months for most learners to pass their driving test in the UK, assuming they take regular weekly lessons and practice between sessions. However, this timeline varies significantly based on individual factors such as lesson frequency, natural ability, private practice opportunities, and test availability in your area. Some students opt for intensive courses and can be test-ready in a matter of weeks, while others prefer a more relaxed pace over several months. At Driving Lessons Wimbledon, we work at your pace and ensure you're fully prepared and confident before booking your test.
Yes, at Driving Lessons Wimbledon, we provide the car for your driving test as part of our service. You'll take your test in the same modern, dual-controlled vehicle you've been learning in, which helps reduce anxiety and ensures you're comfortable and familiar with the car. Our vehicles are fully insured, well-maintained, and meet all DVSA requirements. We'll also accompany you to the test center and provide last-minute guidance and support to help you feel confident on test day.
Absolutely! We offer intensive and crash course driving lessons in Southfields and Wimbledon for learners who want to pass their test quickly. These courses are ideal if you need to get your license fast for work, university, or personal reasons. Our intensive courses are tailored to your current skill level and can range from a few days to a couple of weeks, with multiple hours of instruction per day. We'll assess your ability and create a structured plan to get you test-ready as quickly as possible while ensuring you're safe and confident on the road.
Yes, all our instructors at Driving Lessons Wimbledon are fully DVSA-approved and regularly assessed to maintain the highest standards. They hold valid ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) licenses and undergo continuous professional development to stay updated with the latest teaching techniques and road safety regulations. They are committed to providing professional, patient and effective driving tuition. You can trust that you're learning from qualified experts who prioritize your safety and success.
Yes, we specialize in helping nervous and anxious learners build confidence behind the wheel. We understand that learning to drive can be stressful for some people, which is why we offer a patient, supportive, and anxiety-friendly approach. Our instructors are experienced in working with nervous drivers and will adapt their teaching style to suit your needs, going at a pace that's comfortable for you. We create a calm, reassuring environment and focus on gradual progress, ensuring you feel safe and supported every step of the way. Many of our students who started as nervous learners have gone on to pass their tests with flying colors.
You need to pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test, but not before you start lessons. Many learners begin lessons straight away and revise for the theory alongside them — the two reinforce each other, because hazard perception makes far more sense once you have been out on the road. The theory test has two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions (you need 43 correct) and a hazard perception video section (you need 44 out of 75). It costs £23 and you book it on GOV.UK. Your theory pass certificate is valid for two years, and if it expires before you pass your practical you have to sit it again — so it is worth timing it sensibly rather than rushing it years early.
You book it yourself on GOV.UK, and since 12 May 2026 that is the only way it can be done. The DVSA changed the rules so that only the learner named on the licence can book, change, cancel or swap a practical test — driving instructors and third-party booking services are no longer allowed to do it on your behalf, and it is against the law to book a car test for someone else. This was brought in to shut down the bots and resellers that were hoarding test slots. Two related changes are also in force: since 31 March 2026 you can only move your test appointment twice (it used to be six times), and since 9 June 2026 you can only swap to one of the three test centres closest to your home address. What we can still do is help you judge when you are genuinely test-ready, advise which centre suits you, and make sure you have driven those roads. You will need your provisional licence number, your theory test certificate number, and a card to pay the fee — £62 for a weekday test, or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays (anything from 4:30pm counts as an evening).
Pass Plus is a DVSA training scheme for newly qualified drivers. It covers six areas the practical test never puts you in: town driving, all-weather driving, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways and motorways. It is training rather than an exam, so there is nothing to fail — you either complete the modules or you do not. You do not need it, and nobody will ask to see it. It is worth considering if you passed without ever driving at night or on a motorway, or if you are about to start commuting on roads you have never practised on. Some insurers offer a discount for it, but that varies by insurer and is worth checking with yours before you book rather than assuming.
Yes. Driving lessons are a common gift for a 17th birthday, and you can buy any of our lessons or block-booking packages as a gift for someone else. The person receiving it will need their own provisional licence before their first lesson, so it is worth checking whether they already have one or factoring the £34 application into the gift. Message us on WhatsApp and we will arrange the first lesson directly with them once they are ready.
